The World Reimagined

The World Reimagined will see trails of large globe sculptures in cities across the UK in August-September 2022, created by artists to bring to life the reality and impact of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans. Serena Sussex’s design for a globe was chosen by this unique UK national project.  Serena says “I chose the topic: ‘Expanding the Soul’ because it speaks to me of a love of music as an uplifting expression, for escape and communication. Songs sung by slaves in the 1700s and 1800s are still sung today and have inspired much of the music we listen to now”. Serena goes on to explain her design “The circles of music represent speakers on a sound system with music going out across the whole globe. It’s a diverse music which has its roots in folk and slave song. The background represents the sun and the hot climate of Mother Africa where the slaves originated. Red also represents passion and outrage.”
Serena ends on an optimistic note “The strength and spirit of the oppressed souls of history has influenced music throughout the decades and up to this present day. Music helps those still not free draw courage and inspiration to fight for a better future.” www.theworldreimagined.org
